Artist Statement

Rachel’s work grabs you with the feeling that what you are viewing is yes, beautiful, but also tragic. Their work explores themes based on their personal struggles with mental health such as dysphoria, disassociation, depression, CPTSD, and interpersonal relationships.

An extremely important component of Rachel’s work is the medium itself. The constant struggle in photography for "perfection" is turned on its head in their work. They often use "broken" cameras and "incorrect" photographic processes. Their work is shot entirely on film with no post-production, as they find that these methods enhance and elevate the beauty of the imperfect and the "wrong".

This approach to photography ties back into the themes of mental health and the desire to find beauty despite the damage.
